SACHET App: Overview

SACHET is the Government of India's official disaster alert app and portal. It is run by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and was developed by the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), the R&D centre of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). It shows official early warnings and alerts for floods, cyclones, heavy rain, lightning and other disasters for your location, along with weather forecasts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The app is in the news in 2026. On 2 May 2026, Union Communications Minister Shri Jyotiraditya Scindia launched India's indigenous Cell Broadcast System (CBS), which is integrated with the SACHET platform. A nationwide test message was sent to mobile phones on the same day. With heavy rain, cyclone and winter-weather alerts common across India, SACHET is a useful app to keep on every phone.

Latest 2026 Update: Cell Broadcast Linked to SACHET

  • 29 April 2026: PIB said pan-India testing of the indigenous Cell Broadcast system was underway. Test messages reached only phones with Cell Broadcast test channels on, and people might get the same test message more than once. No action was needed.
  • 30 April 2026: PIB announced that Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah, along with Shri Jyotiraditya Scindia, would launch the nationwide mobile-based disaster communication systems. Test messages were planned for phones in all state capitals and Delhi-NCR, in English, Hindi and regional languages.
  • 2 May 2026: The Cell Broadcast System was launched. As per PIB, it sends geo-targeted alerts to all phones in a chosen area, works on 2G to 5G networks, is multilingual, and is not affected by network congestion. On supported phones the alert appears as a priority pop-up with a loud tone and read-aloud text, and users cannot turn it off.

In simple words: SMS alerts and Cell Broadcast messages reach you automatically, while the SACHET app lets you see all current alerts, check other places and read safety advice whenever you want.

Key Features of the SACHET App

  • Official alerts only: Location-specific warnings from authorised alert agencies and the disaster management authorities of all 36 States/UTs.
  • Alerts for your location: Geo-targeted alerts for where you are right now.
  • Subscribe to other places: Add any Indian state or district, for example your home town or where your parents live, and get alerts for it too.
  • IMD weather: Weather reports and forecasts for your current and searched locations.
  • Do's and Don'ts: Disaster-wise safety tips, with a read-aloud feature for persons with disabilities.
  • Helpline numbers and affected-area information shown with alerts.
  • 12 Indian languages with translation and read-out.
  • Notifications for different types of disaster alerts.

The SACHET portal also shows state-wise CAP alerts and IMD forecast alerts, offers browser notifications on Chrome, Firefox and Edge, and has an RSS feed for broadcasters. NDMA's SMS alerts come from the header XX-NDMAEW.

Who Should Use It?

  • Every mobile user in India, especially in flood, cyclone, landslide or heavy-rain prone areas.
  • Farmers, fishermen and travellers who need weather warnings.
  • Families who want alerts for a relative's district.
  • Pilgrims and tourists in hill states (PIB notes the Cell Broadcast system is used for the Char Dham Yatra).
